Lookism – Our tendency to discriminate bad-looking individuals:

Lookism i.e. our tendency to discriminate bad-looking people prevails in our attitudes. Even small children discriminate bad-looking childs. Good looking childs don’t (at least tend to avoid) play with bad looking childs. They even beat them. Elders also pay less attention to bad looking childs. Individual’s appearance has very much to do with the over-all social status for him/ her. Bad apparence is bad but it becomes evil if it is artificial. Sometimes discussion on Lookism takes into consideration Darwin’s “Survival of Fittest Principle” as well. In that context, I agree only to a partial point that natural selection means tendency of selecting good looking and better life partners but I disagree to the survival of fittest principle. If fittest means good looking, or more healthy, or more intelligent or clever; then according to survival of fittest principle, majority population should consist of good looking, more healthy etc. people. This is not true not only for humans, but for other animals as well. Majority human population consists of ordinary looking common people. In animals, “superior” breeds of animals are in so much minority that even the future survival of many of those breeds is in danger. Many superior and the fittest species already have been extinguished. Total number of Lions, Tigers, and Elephants etc. are not more than some thousands in our present world. Whereas the most inferior species i.e. bacteria is the majority species of world.

Bad appearance is bad in the sense that it does not give pleasant feelings to observers. On the other side, to discriminate, or to misbehave with bad looking individuals is also bad because it hurts other fellow beings. One way to counter this ethical problem is to educate people to pay some sort of artificial good treatment to bad looking people. The other way is that bad looking people should try to become good looking, even artificially. I just recently have started watching TV regularly. I think it is the ad of “Nikhar” beauty cream where at first a boy comments for a somewhat bad looking girl that he shall “decide to marry her after thinking”. After it, the girl starts using “Nikhar” beauty cream. And as a result, ball goes to the court of girl and now girl says: “I shall decide to marry him after thinking”.

Micheal Jackson is good example of an attempt to look good, even artificially. Anyways, Bad looking couple would reproduce bad looking offspring. Good-looking couple would reproduce good-looking offspring. But if one partner in couple is good looking and the other is bad looking, then offspring shall be better than bad looking. The diffusion of white man with Negro has taken place in the recent history of America. The resulting whole new generation is having chocolate like colour.

Its rational result is that good-looking people should try hard to find good-looking people as their partners and bad looking people also should try hard to make good-looking people as their partners. It is a strange result. But it is the only way to upgrade the over-all appearance quality of humanity’s next generations.

  2. I have visited your blog after long time, and topic lookism is really sensitive issue of the time. Now people are judged by their physical outlook and communication skills rather by their talents and other skills. But here I would like to say that those having ordinary looks can bring an improvement by changing their attitude and increasing their knowledge and expertiese.

Your suggestion for producing normal looking progeny by combination of good looking and normal looking individuals is bit difficult to attain. When the matters come to life partner a good looking boy would never like to have an ordinary looking girl and so the case with girls. Even I have seen ordinary looking males, well settled in life ask for 1 compulstory condition that is a good looking girl with smart body stature so what you will say for them? and how to produce normal looking progeny as in the case of choclate skin generation by the combination of White and Black Americans?

    Waiting for your reply

actually, that was the strangest result that I have ever read. But that was enough for me to impress by the
heart. I am now searching appropriate comments about lookism for the school homework, and is it okay to use your idea?

Our society is full of “lookism”. Even in schools – i know that the “good-looking” children have better notes than “ugly” children… This is ridiculous. We must fight against lookism!

But my good horatio there are more things in the heaven and earth then are dreamt of in this philosophy.
I don’t refute all these notions. But before I can put my petition into your ‘Sarkar’, Neil Bohr can’t wait to put his any time later, so the better. He says, “Opposites are not contradictory but they are complementary.”
I have experienced love of that spirit I remember not fully whose face, my ears are unfamiliar with that voice yet I am feel almost incomplete without them. Therefore the reason for my love is higher then what lookism demands for furnishing good matrimonial or else relations. It is embeded in that respect I have for their sophism, intellection, beauty of character, faqr, purity and virtuous nature, and yet I know very little of them but have seen only a mirage of them from distant. It is ingrained in human being that he finds higher then himself. He/she wants to follow him and to love for their own sake whether it be an idol, for some cases. They feel almost incomplete with them and want to reconcile with them as you satisfy that upheaval of restlessness created by that ingrained spiritual thirst, may you call it. Therefore, there are more things between heaven and earth… They can be seen even with a blind eye provided, as Aurfi Shiraz demands that you must have a strong and true thirst- mirage would become water for you then. Regards.

Shouldn’t the point be that we should set aside looks and rid of discrimination rather than artificially fix people and/or have selective mating based on looks. I disagree with most of this article.

The part about survival of the fittest is wrong; survival of the fittest does not mean bigger/stronger/prettier; it means the success of the species as a whole. Simply because a species has the most population/is the most physically powerful does not mean it is the fittest; it can be called the fittest if it has the greatest percentage growth compared to other species in its environment. Survival of the fittest has nothing to do with the idea of lookism.

“Its rational result is that good-looking people should try hard to find good-looking people as their partners and bad looking people also should try hard to make good-looking people as their partners. It is a strange result. But it is the only way to upgrade the over-all appearance quality of humanity’s next generations.”

Your opinion is as stated above, but you are basically reinforcing the idea of lookism. Trying to get non-beautiful people to have beautiful partners is the entire problem; beautiful people will tend to look for beautiful people. If your opinion is to get the entire human race to become beautiful, then kill all the non-beautiful people and we won’t have a problem with lookism nor will we have a problem with the non-beautiful people. Your thoughts of trying to avoid lookism is very poor, and very short sighted.

Thankyou for your valuable points. But … if “survival of the fittest” means “survival of the adaptive” then it should be renamed as “survival of the adaptive”.

And … why that “rational” result was drawn?

It was due to preceeding para:

“Bad appearance is bad in the sense that it does not give pleasant feelings to observers. On the other side, to discriminate, or to misbehave with bad looking individuals is also bad because it hurts other fellow beings. One way to counter this ethical problem is to educate people to pay some sort of artificial good treatment to bad looking people. After it, the girl starts using “Nikhar” beauty cream. And as a result, ball goes to the court of girl and now girl says: “I shall decide to marry him after thinking”.

So it is not the issue of only my short shightedness. It is the issue of behaviour of people. If I become broadminded,,, people will not change their actual behaviour and attitude.

It is so true what is being said about lookism. It is the new racism. Having said that I would not want to bang some ugly looking lard ass bitch either. I would tell that skank to go on a diet and stop eating smarties and for her to pop those pimples and fix her teeth.
